The Mekong River Delta’s coastal provinces will receive US$ 2 million from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to carry out the climate change adaptation project with the aim to develop sustainable agriculture and rural areas within 2 years (2011-2012).

On April 28, representatives of JICA and the Southern Irrigation Planning Institute signed a cooperation agreement to support this project. Specifically, the project will put forward measures to adapt to climate change in the process of agricultural and rural development in the coastal Mekong River Delta; forecast and impact assessment of climate change in the medium and long- term period of 2020-2050; development of an overall planning adapting to climate change; capacity improvement in planning to adapt to climate change and in implementing the projects on agricultural and rural development.
Besides, the project will help the Mekong River Delta- one of the three deltas most vulnerable to climate change to deal with some currently concerned issues such as saltwater intrusion and coastal erosion due to sea level rise, safety of freshwater and agricultural land use planning .
