Authorities in Quang Tri Province are working on a plan to deal with a large whale carcass that has washed ashore and is already decomposing, local officials said on February 9.
The incident was reported at about 3 pm on February 8, when residents alerted local authorities to a large dead marine animal on the southern end of My Thuy Beach.
Officials from the commune’s economic division were sent to the scene to inspect and verify the report. They confirmed it was a whale, estimated to weigh about one tonne, and in an advanced state of decomposition.
The carcass lies in a section of coastline affected by erosion, making access and disposal difficult.
Local authorities said they are now working with relevant units to develop a solution suited to on-the-ground conditions, while ensuring environmental safety and protecting the beach’s landscape
