(VACNE) – As reported by VnExpress newspaper, on April 25, a collision between a Panamanian container ship and a Hong Kong cargo ship occurred on the Long Tau River, in Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City. This serious incident has caused a large-scale oil spill, affecting about 17 hectares of mangrove forest, an area of special ecological value.
According to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Maritime Authority, more than 240 people and dozens of specialized vehicles and equipment have been mobilized to handle environmental incidents. As of May 1, functional forces have collected 860 m³ of spilled oil.
From the first days after the collision, the Environmental SOS Center, a unit under the Vietnam Association for Nature and Environment Protection (VACNE), sent forces to support the incident response. With available experience and equipment, the Center's team has actively coordinated with the authorities to zone, collect and treat the amount of oil, contributing to minimizing adverse impacts on the Can Gio mangrove ecosystem.
