A month after the Vietnam Heritage Trees Recognition Event was launched; the VACNE office received a new tree registration from Mr. Nguyen Van Trinh, the janitor of the communal house in Rua (Turtle) Village, Van Hoa Commune, Ba Vi District. He requested that VACNE recognizes the "Than Rua" banian tree (Ficus bengalensis) as a Vietnam heritage tree.

According to the legend, the "Than Rua" banian tree is nearly a thousand years old. The legend says that the communal house of the Rua Village was built more than 800 years ago, on the foundation of a small temple and at the foot of Ba Vi Mountain, where the tree had already been growing.  At that time the whole area and its surroundings were covered by thick jungles.

This banian tree has become firmly attached to the cultural and spiritual lives of local residents. After centuries this giant multi-trunk banian tree is still in a great and healthy  state. It is 28 meters high, with a perimeter of nearly 30 meters and is regarded as one of the biggest and nicest ancient trees in Vietnam.
