Local residents had spotted the birds during migration and reported them after finding they were injured.
The management board said the pigeons will be released back into the wild once fully recovered and able to adapt to their natural habitat.
The Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is one of six bird species on Con Dao listed in both Vietnam’s and the world’s Red Books. In Vietnam, the species has been sighted only on Con Dao, mainly on Bay Canh Island. It primarily inhabits primary forests, mangroves, and small islands, typically nesting in tall trees where it lays and incubates its eggs.
Due to habitat loss and illegal hunting, Nicobar pigeons have experienced a sharp population decline, earning them protected status. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the species is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List and is listed in Appendix I of CITES.
