Phu Quoc among top Southeast Asian destinations during rainy season

21 October 2025 | 08:25:00 AM

Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island has been named among top Southeast Asian destinations to visit during the rainy and off-peak season, according to Singapore-based news channel Channel News Asia (CNA).

Covering an area of 574 square kilometers, slightly smaller than Singapore, Phu Quoc undergoes a striking transformation between May and October, its traditional rainy season.

CNA quoted Sriram Kailasam, general manager of Regent Phu Quoc, an award-winning beachfront sanctuary, describing the island as “a lush paradise,” with verdant rainforests, gentle mists, and a peaceful atmosphere free from the usual tourist crowds.

Rainy weather doesn’t dampen the experience for nature enthusiasts either. Ong, a representative from travel platform Trip.com, highlighted that Phu Quoc’s rainfall helps reveal hidden gems like Suoi Tranh and Suoi Da Ban waterfalls.

“In Phu Quoc, rainfall helps to reveal majestic waterfalls like Suoi Tranh and Suoi Da Ban, and higher water levels enhance kayaking adventures in mangrove forests,” said Ong.

For many travellers, the rainy months in Southeast Asia which can stretch from May through November has long been a time to steer clear of tropical destinations. Rainy skies, wet streets, and unpredictable weather patterns tend to push people towards drier, more temperate escapes.

But that’s starting to change. According to Anthony Lu, regional director of Southeast Asia and Greater China at Booking.com, a shift is underway. “Rather than avoiding the season entirely, travellers are becoming more intentional, prioritising convenience, value and cultural exposure over perfect weather.”
