To be recognized as heritage trees, the trees must be at least 200 years old in the case of wild trees, and at least 100 years for those planted. Moreover, the trees should be connected with historical and cultural features of the area where they grow.
Along with the value of tourism, the banyan tree and many of them on Son Tra Peninsula are important food for many species of rare animals, especially a rare langur on the peninsula.
Currently, more than 500 trees belonging to 40 species were recognized by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment as Vietnam Heritage Trees. The recognition of the banyan tree in Son Tra peninsula is an important event in the province. This will on the one hand help to protect valuable genetic resources, and on the other hand promote the diversity of flora on the Son Tra Peninsula.
