Vietnam Environment Administration investigates landfill pollution

21 September 2017 | 10:41:00 AM

The Vietnam Environment Administration is inspecting a huge dumping site which is seriously affecting locals and companies in Hanoi and Ha Nam Province.

The landfill in Ha Nam Province

The inspection will last 60 days after the locals in Duy Tien District in Ha Nam Province and Phu Xuyen District in Hanoi complained about the pollution from the site. The inspection at the Tam Sinh Nghia JSC waste treatment facility was ordered by Hanoi and Ha Nam provincial authorities.

Phu Xuyen District authorities previously have sent various documents to the Ha Nam People's Committee, Hanoi and Ha Nam departments of natural resources and environment to inspect and deal with violations by Tam Sinh Nghia JSC. The water pollution should also be assessed and dealt with.

The dumping site is located near the residential area and Dong Van II Industrial Zone. Not only the locals living nearby but employees of many companies claimed to be tortured by the smell and filed many complaints.

Nippon Thermostat Vietnam Company asked the management board of Ha Nam's industrial zones provide support and quickly deal with the problem as the smell had badly affected their work.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is also monitoring the inspection at the landfills and buried rubbish of the Tam Sinh Nghia JSC in HCM City.

HCM City authorities only allow Tam Sinh Nghia JSC to incinerate and recycle the rubbish as fertiliser. The company is not allowed to bury the rubbish but many trucks under the company were found dumping and burying the rubbish. The Environmental Police Department launched an investigation into the case.

Tam Sinh Nghia JSC went into operation in December 2012 with capacity to incinerate 20 tonnes a day. When another waste treatment company shut down, Tam Sinh Nghia JSC has to deal with 180-200 tonnes of rubbish a day.
