Xuan Thuy National Park, a bird paradise

24 November 2016 | 11:55:00 AM

Xuan Thuy National Park is the first wetland in Southeast Asia to participate in the 1989 Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, known as Ramsar site.

In 2004, UNESCO recognized the site as the core area of the Red River Delta Biosphere Reserves. It has become a popular ecological tourism site.

Located 150km southeast of Ha Noi, Xuan Thuy National Park, Nam Dinh Province, is the habitat of hundreds of fauna and flora species.

The park is special for its geographical structure and diverse wetland ecological system.

Nguyen Phuc Hoi, Deputy Director of Xuan Thuy National Park, said “This is a wetland national park which is close to the estuary of the Red River. Its ecological system is typical of Viet Nam’s northern coastal region. The park is comprised of mangrove forest, canals, lagoons, and sand dunes”.

The park covers more than 12,000ha. Its core area covers 7,100ha and is the habitat of 120 flora species, more than 500 fauna species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

The site’s ecological system is unique thanks to the rich soil of the Red River and the coastal area.

Between October and March, thousands of wild birds migrate from the north to Xuan Thuy National Park.

Many of the 200 species of birds in the Park are listed in the Red List of the Endangered species.

Xuan Thuy mangrove forest is also home to many species of water-birds. The fragrance of mangrove flowers in their blossoming season attracts honey bees.

Nguyen Van Truong, official of Xuan Thuy National Park, said “The core area is approximately 3.5km from the headquarters of the Park Management Board.

Along that 3.5km road is a buffer zone where local people raise shrimps, fish and crabs. Xuan Thuy is famous for having Red Book listed migratory birds”.

Xuan Thuy is a paradise for birds and for nature lovers. Mr. Truong said “At the moment, it's the bird’s migration season when Xuan Thuy becomes a refuge for waterfowl fleeing the winter.

The buffer zone in the park is home to 8 different species of ducks and the sand dunes are home to riparian birds.”

Xuan Thuy is beautiful all year. Thanh Lan, a Ha Noi tourist, said "This is the first time I’ve seen these birds. They are absolutely incredible. Here nature is wild and beautiful. "

If you dream of a unique place and an unforgettable experience, Xuan Thuy National Park is your choice.
