Cold snap hits northern Vietnam

04 January 2026 | 10:09:00 AM

The northern region of Vietnam is witnessing a strong cold wave with temperatures dropping to as low as 4 degrees Celsius at Mau Son peak in Lang Son Province.

The north is entering its third consecutive day under the influence of a cold air mass, which is forecast to spread further south, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

Minimum temperatures in northern Vietnam are forecast at 12-15 degrees Celcius, falling to 9-12 degrees Celcius in mountainous areas and below 8 degrees Celcius in some high-altitude locations where frost is possible.

North-central areas are expected at 13-16 degrees Celcius, while Quang Tri to Hue could see lows of 16-19 degrees Celcius.

In Hanoi, temperatures ranged from 12 degrees Celcius at the Ba Vi station to around 13 degrees Celcius in Son Tay, Hoai Duc, Ha Dong and Lang areas.

Other mountainous areas also saw sharp drops, with Sapa at 7 degrees Celcius, Dong Van, Nguyen Binh and Tam Dao around 8 degrees Celcius and Ngan Son and Pha Din at about 9 degrees Celcius.

The cold weather may also trigger showers, thunderstorms, whirlwinds and hail from Ha Tinh to Danang, as well as in eastern Quang Ngai to Dak Lak.

Prolonged cold conditions could affect livestock, poultry and crop growth, while heavy localised rain may cause flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes.
