Promoting the role of the Heritage Tree Conservation event in socio-economic development in Vietnam

19 March 2026 | 09:14:00 AM

(VACNE – 18/3) – This is the directive opinion of Dr. Nguyễn Ngọc Sinh, President of the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Nature and Environment, at the meeting on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the event 'Conservation of Vietnam's Heritage Trees' (March 18, 2010 – March 18, 2026).

Tattending the friendly meeting were leaders of the Vietnam Association for Nature and Environment Protection, the Vietnam Heritage Trees Council, the Heritage Tree Connection Cycling Club, the Association's Office, along with experts.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Nguyễn Ngọc Sinh emphasized that on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the event's launch, it is necessary to continue mobilizing community strength to expand the movement of protecting and caring for ancient trees associated with the conservation of natural landscapes and the environment. At the same time, attention should be paid to propagating rare genetic resources, contributing to economic development, ecotourism, and creating additional sustainable livelihoods for local people. The President of VACNE also mentioned that the book "Vietnamese Heritage Trees" Volume 4 is being finalized. In addition, many localities such as Vĩnh Long, Hanoi, Ninh Bình, and Thanh Hóa are preparing to hold ceremonies to receive the Certificate of Recognition for Vietnamese Heritage Trees.

Introducing the formation and development process of the movement, Professor, Doctor of Science Dang Huy Huynh, Chairman of the Vietnam Heritage Tree Council, stated: to date, the Council has received nearly 11,000 applications from localities and recognized over 8,100 trees belonging to more than 160 species of vascular higher plants as Vietnam Heritage Trees. These trees are not only ancient trees at the village entrances, river docks, or within the premises of temples and communal houses, but also include many landscape trees and precious medicinal trees. Notably, to date, all 34 provinces and cities across the country, from mountainous areas and plains to remote islands, have Vietnam Heritage Trees. Alongside this, the Vietnam Association for the Conservation of Nature and Environment has published three volumes of “Vietnam Heritage Trees” and is preparing to release the fourth volume. All of these books have been introduced by Party and State leaders and leading scientists, and published by reputable publishers. This proves that these publications of VACNE not only has scientific value, but also has political prestige in Vietnamese society.

On behalf of the Vietnam Nature and Environment Protection Society, the Professor also expressed gratitude to the functional agencies, authorities at all levels, organizations, media agencies, and especially the community for accompanying, supporting, and contributing to strongly spreading the movement of Preserving Heritage Trees nationwide.

At the meeting, VACNE leaders and experts such as Prof. Dr. NGND. Trần Hiếu Nhuệ, Prof. Dr. Trần Công Khánh, Dr. Nguyễn Thị Thu Hà, Mr. Lê Huy Cường along with the Head of the Heritage Tree Cycling Club exchanged and shared many related topics. Among them, they emphasized the economic and medicinal values of certain tree species that have been recognized as Heritage Trees, thereby raising community awareness in protecting and developing local genetic resources, proactively preventing pests and diseases, contributing to improving livelihoods, and promoting sustainable development.
