Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields - A brocade painting in the middle of the sky

Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields (Ha Giang Province) are famous for their colourful, winding like giant, magical brocade painting in the middle of the sky. With its majestic scenery, Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields are not only an attractive and famous tourist destination but also a special natural and cultural symbol of the northern mountainous region.

 

Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields are located in 24 communes, of which terraced fields in 11 communes are ranked as National Monument, including: Ban Phung, Ban Luoc, San Sa Ho, Ho Thau, Nam Ty, Thong Nguyen, Ta Su Choong, Ban Nhung, Po Lo, Thanh Tin and Nam Khoa (Hoang Su Phi District). In particular, Ban Phung is considered to have the most beautiful terraced fields. In 2011 and 2016, terraced rice fields in Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang were officially recognized as a National Monument by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The distinct change of colours between seasons has made Hoang Su Phi especially vibrant in the majestic natural landscape of mountains and forests.

The unique feature of terraced fields in the Ha Giang Plateau lies in their scale and the ingenuity in construction and cultivation as well as their aesthetics and artistry. More than just a tool for local people to produce food, each layer of the field is meticulously crafted with carefully calculated heights and slopes to optimise harvesting and protect the soil from erosion.
