Vietnam ships first green pomelo consignment to Australia

14 April 2026 | 08:08:00 AM

Vietnam on April 13 exported its first official shipment of green skinned pomelos to Australia after two years of negotiations, opening a fourth high standard market for the fruit.

The launch ceremony took place at the Kim Thanh 01 facility in Vinh Long Province, with the shipment led by Vina T&T Group using Ben Tre green pomelos cultivated in the province.

The company has invested in certified growing areas, modern processing and packaging systems, and end to end quality control across its supply chain. It has previously exported pomelos to the US and the European Union, both considered among the most demanding agricultural markets.

Vietnam and Australia agreed on import requirements in October 2025, with final procedures completed on April 10, clearing the way for the shipment.

Australia is regarded as one of the world’s most stringent markets in terms of quarantine and food safety standards, highlighting the significance of the export for both Vinh Long and Vietnam’s agricultural sector.

The milestone comes as Vietnam fruit and vegetable exports reached a record USD 8.5 billion in 2025 and rose 17 per cent year on year to USD 1.5 billion in the first quarter of 2026. The country is targeting USD 10 billion in exports this year.

Vinh Long has around 13,800 hectares of pomelo plantations, while nationwide acreage exceeds 100,000 hectares with annual output nearing one million tonnes. However, export value remains relatively modest at about USD 60 million in 2024.
