A VND36.5 billion (USD1.58 million) project to dredge Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal in HCM City will be started later this week.
The project divided into three phases will be carried out from now to the year-end to deal with the 9-kilometre canal.

Around 122,000 cubic metres of mud is expected to be dredged said Pham Ngoc Dung, director of the Waterway Management Centre under the HCM CIty Department of Transport.
The project will clean around 1.4 kilometres of the canal each in the first and second phases. The remainder will be tackled in the third phase scheduled in the fourth quarter of this year.
The mud will be transported to Da Phuoc waste treatment area.
Dung added the city will use the technology of a Japanese company for controlling bad odours coming from the mud.
The canal was dredged eight years ago, but it continues to face severe pollution, causing mass fish deaths several times.
