HCM City to spend VND2trn on canal renovation

03 April 2021 | 03:19:00 PM

A project to renovate the 1.1-kilometre Hy Vong Canal to prevent flooding for the Tan Son Nhat Airport has been proposed with an estimated investment of nearly VND2trn (USD86.3m).

Hy Vong Canal to be renovated

Hy Vong Canal renovation is a part of the water drainage and solutions to pollution in the Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Rach Nuoc canals project which has been started in 2013 and categorised as an urgent project by the HCM City People's Committee.

In May 2016, HCM City People's Committee approved the flooding risks management project that uses ODA from the World Bank. The canal renovation was also a part of this project with an investment of VND488bn (USD21m). However, the project was cancelled in June 2016. The estimated ground clearance and resettlement costs in 2016 were VND277bn.

Hy Vong Canal renovation's previous investor was HCM City Steering Centre of Urban Flood Control. As the ground clearance cost increased and the matter has become more urgent with time, the project was transferred to the HCM City Management Board of Urban Infrastructure Construction Projects.

It is estimated that VND1.6trn (USD69m) will be used on 2ha ground clearance and compensation for the people in Tan Binh District. 55 manholes will be opened and new roads that are 6 metres wide will be built along the canal. The project will be carried out from 2021 to 2025, using the state budget.

HCM City Management Board of Urban Infrastructure Construction Projects has asked HCM City People's Council to review and approve the project as soon as possible.

Tan Son Nhat Airport has three drainage canals via Hy Vong, A41 and Nhat Ban. Work to upgrade A41 and Nhat Ban canals has also been carried out.
