Ministry green lights mud dumping off Quang Ngai coast

06 March 2019 | 06:30:00 AM

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has allowed the dumping of 15 million cubic metres of sand and mud into waters off Quang Ngai.

A port is being built at Hoa Phat-Dung Quat Iron and Steel Production Complex

While building a port at Hoa Phat-Dung Quat Iron and Steel Production Complex, the investors dredged up 15.4 million cubic metres of 86.4% sand and 13.6% mud.

The ministry has allowed Hoa Phat Steel JSC to dump the mud and sand into a 180-hectare area from March 1 to May 31, 2020. About 7.69 million cubic metres will be dumped into the sea in the first phase and the next 7.7 million cubic metres will be dumped in the second phase.

Hoa Phat Steel JSC must register their mud-dumping vehicles, install monitoring devices and file reports about the whole process for transparency. The authorities will inspect and supervise the dumping process.

The dumping was proposed by Tran Ngoc Cang, Chairman of Quang Ngai People's Committee, last year. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment inspected the area and concluded that there were no coral reefs or endemic creatures in last November.

The first phase of the construction of Hoa Phat-Dung Quat Iron and Steel Production Complex will be completed in the first quarter and the second phase will be completed in the second quarter. It is expected to be able to have the capacity to produce two million tonnes of long steel each year in the first phase and two million of hot rolled steel in the second phase.
