Ascott plants trees for environmental conservation

07 August 2009 | 10:23:00 AM

Singaporean serviced residence operator Ascott will start tomorrow planting 20,000 mangrove trees on a two-hectare site in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang, some 300 km from HCMC.

The company says it will call staff from properties under its management, including Somerset Chancellor Court and Somerset HCMC, to take part in the arboreal program in Hoa Lac Commune in Vinh Chau District as part of the group’s environmental conservation efforts for climate change mitigation.
Ascott says the program is in support of the Government’s efforts to compensate for the loss of mangrove forests over the last six decades, and through this tree-planting exercise, the firm wants to raise its colleagues’ awareness of the need to be environmentally conscious and to instill in staff a sense of ownership towards the environment outside the office.
Eddie Lim, Ascott International’s country general manager, says the tree-planting serves a variety of purposes including combating global warming and storms, protecting the biodiversity of forests, revitalizing the soil and forming a buffer zone against exploitation of forests.
Lim says the exercise also promotes a work-life balance and team spirit for the company’s staff as it is different from the usual work routine.
“By getting the staff to participate, they will learn to cherish nature. Everyone has a part to play to save the earth,” Lim said.
Ascott International manages 1,050 serviced residence units across six properties in Vietnam.
