Effective Implementing the Project on Nhue River Protection

On August 8, 2011, at a meeting with the Inspection Task Force of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Mr. Vu Hong Khanh, Vice-Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee, confirmed that Hanoi is doing well in implementing the Master Plan for environmental protection of the Nhue-Day River Delta.

Mr. Vu Hong Khanh said the city has developed the necessary documents, mechanisms, and policies in supporting the implementation of the Master plan effectively. The city has also implemented some projects and programs aiming at reducing environmental pollution in the city, namely projects on “Tasks and measures to deal with urgent environmental pollution in the Hanoi area until 2010” and “Environmental protection and land use governance of Nhue River delta”.

Since 2009, Hanoi Department for Natural Resources and Environment has been carrying out monitoring work to assess quality and flow of waste water directly discharged to Nhue and Day rivers anually. To reduce water pollution in Nhue River, the city has carried out projects to improve and upgrade To Lich River by building sewage lines/facilities for collection of waste water along the river together with treating waste water sources before discharging to the river, applying a strict control to stop unplanned disposing solid waste at river sides. The city has also carried out treatment of polluted water in other rivers, canals, and lakes in the city. Moreover, it also focused on building waste water treatment stations for industrial parks, craft villages, and domestic waste water. The city also invested in projects of improving, dredging river bed, rehabilitating, and newly constructing irrigation systems in Nhue-Day river delta which are being carried out by the Department for Agriculture and Rural Development.

For the time being, the city has given priority to develop a “Plan for water resources use management and environment protection of Nhue – Day river delta to 2015 and towards 2020” and “Project to upgrade capacity of environmental governance, inspection, control, monitor, and development of environment protection activities to serve communities in the whole delta of Nhue and Day rivers.
