HCM City to spend $21m to prevent flooding in outlying district

08 June 2017 | 10:13:00 AM

A VNĐ473 billion (US$21 million) flood-prevention project in HCM City’s Bình Thạnh District will be implemented in the period of 2017-2018, according to the city’s Department of Transport.

Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh Street in HCM City’s Bình Thạnh District, which is prone to chronic flooding,
will be upgraded in the period of 2017-2018.

The project aims to upgrade Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh Street, which is frequently flooded by heavy rains and rising tides, seriously affecting traffic and people’s lives.

The department’s Urban Traffic Management Zone No.1 will be tasked with the construction of upgrading the street, which is a major route connecting the centre to the city’s eastern gateway.

Many sections of the street are often under about 0.5 metres of water due to heavy rains and high tides.

Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh Street, which was built in 2003, is 3.2 kilometres long and 30 metres wide with six lanes.

Since 2004, the street had more than one metre depression, according to the department’s Urban Traffic Management Zone No.1.

In the beginning of 2017, a company tested the use of anti-flood centrifugal pumps on Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh Street, but the department said using the equipment would not be really effective in the long run.
