Ho Chi Minh City approves more than VND 17 trillion for canal dredging

16 November 2025 | 06:10:00 AM

Ho Chi Minh City has approved two canal dredging projects in the southern area worth more than VND 17 trillion (approximately USD 645 million).

The first project covers Ong Be Canal and its branch in Chanh Hung Ward, (formerly District 8), and Binh Hung Commune (formerly Binh Chanh District), which connect with Doi Canal and the city’s southern zone.

These sections are heavily clogged with debris and household encroachments that obstruct drainage and cause foul odours. The plan includes dredging 4.2 kilometres of canal and building lighting, greenery and pedestrian walkways.

The project has a total investment of more than VND 7.7 trillion from the city budget, including more than VND 6.2 trillion for compensation and resettlement and more than VND 1.1 trillion for construction.

The second project will dredge Ba Lon Canal in Binh Dong Ward near Binh Hung Commune, with more than VND 9.2 trillion (approximately USD 350 million) in funding. It includes VND 6.6 trillion for compensation and resettlement and the construction of the new Ba Lon 2 Bridge on National Highway 50, scheduled for completion in 2030.

Both projects aim to improve urban aesthetics, expand green corridors, enhance drainage and strengthen socioeconomic development in the city’s southern area.
