This is the project that won the third prize in "Green Idea Contest 2010" on the production of biological semi-organic coal by mixing waste with normal coal to form semi-organic coal with a longer burn time, no fumes, a significant decline in CO2 emission and the low price of only 1,700 VND per briquette.
Duong Lieu in Hoai Duc district, Ha Noi, is a traditional craft commune that specializes in producing rice dry pancake and cassava vermicelli. Each year, this village discharges about 600,000 tons of organic waste into environment, which are mainly grain residue after processing. Pollution caused by these types of waste dumped into sewers, piling up the river over the last years has become a local problem.
A contestant delivered her ideal to the board of examiners in the competition
Challenged by this issue, a group of young people including Nguyen Phi Truong, Nguyen Phi Vuong and Huu Thi Duong, who are grade 12 students, have researched and succeeded in processing organic coal from these sources of waste. “To ong” (bees' nest shaped) coal and briquette successfully tested by the group contain 60% organic waste from craft villages, and 40% of normal slack. Measurement results have shown that the heat generated by burning coal is 10%-20% higher than the normal coal, with longer burn time and 25%-35% cheaper prices (1,700VND per briquette). In addition, organic coal can be reused to produce fertilizer after being burnt completely.
Before that, Mr. Truong’s idea was tested at home by mixing waste with normal coal to form a semi- organic coal with a longer burn time, no fumes and a significant decrease in CO2 emission. In spite of not participating in any training schools, Nguyen Phi Truong is very confident in presenting his idea in “Green idea Festival." The project has received high appreciation from the board of examiners in terms of feasibility and social values for Duong Lieu craft village as soon as it is replicated.
The group leader Nguyen Phi Truong said excitedly that "With the amount of capital sponsored by Toyota Vietnam, we will expand production units to improve productivity, advance technology to produce semi-organic coal that is absolutely free of CO2 emission.”
