Red River Delta

Being one of two great delta of Vietnam, the Red River Delta is fertility land being enlarged by alluvia from system of the Red and Thai Binh river. Administratively, the Red River Delta covers 10 provinces or cities including Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh and Thai Binh, total of 85 districts and 96 towns. Its total area is 14.806 km².


 


 

Overview of the Red River Delta
 
Being one of two great delta of Vietnam, the Red River Delta is fertility land being enlarged by alluvia from system of the Red and Thai Binh river.
 
Administratively, the Red River Delta covers 10 provinces or cities including Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh and Thai Binh, total of 85 districts and 96 towns. Its total area is 14.806 km².
 
The Delta has the highest population density in Vietnam (about 1225 people/km²) (2006). Total population reaches 17.649.700 people (2003).
 
The Red River Delta Biosphere Reserve
 
One part of Southern land of the Red River Delta has recognized by UNESCO in 2004 as the Red River Delta Biosphere Reserve. On October 13, 2008, with support from Vietnam Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) – Vietnam Committee and Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD), UNESCO awarded officially certificate of the Biosphere Reserve to Management Board in Nam Dinh city.
 
The Red River Delta Biosphere Reserve is one of 6 Biosphere Reserves has been recognized by UNESCO in Vietnam as of 2007. Total area of the Biosphere reaches 105.557 ha. The core of the Biosphere has 14.167 ha area including Xuan Thuy National Park and Tien Hai Natural Reserve. The buffer covers 5 districts including Kim Son district (Ninh Binh province); Giao Thuy, Nghia Hung (Nam Dinh province); Thai Thuy and Tien Hai district (Thai Binh province) with area of 37000ha. Population of the buffer zone is over 128 000 people (2004)
