Cold front to end heatwave across northern Vietnam

15 April 2026 | 09:13:00 AM

A weak cold front is set to bring rain and cooler weather to northern Vietnam from April 16, ending a prolonged spell of hot conditions.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, a weak cold air mass is moving southwards, compressing a low pressure trough along 24-27 degrees north latitude.

From the night of April 16 to April 17, northern Vietnam, excluding Lai Chau and Dien Bien, along with Thanh Hoa Province, is forecast to see showers and thunderstorms, with moderate to heavy rain in some areas. Rainfall is expected to range from 20-40 mm, with isolated areas exceeding 100 mm.

Thunderstorms may bring extreme weather conditions, including tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts. From April 17, temperatures across the north are expected to drop, bringing cooler conditions.

Meteorologists warn that severe weather could disrupt agricultural production, damage trees, housing and transport infrastructure. Localised heavy rain may also trigger flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and flooding in low lying areas.

Forecasts from AccuWeather indicate that Hanoi will experience showers and thunderstorms from April 17 to 19, with temperatures ranging between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius. Hot weather is expected to return from April 21.
